Avon Scouts Compete for Rickard Shield

20 March 2014

Inline images 2On Saturday night over 150 young people from Explorer and Network scout units across Bristol, South Glos, North Somerset and B&NES took part in a team challenge in the hills around Timsbury near Bath.

Bath was represented by Blaze Explorers while Leaders from the 28th and Bath Network were involved running bases and helping with Avon Scout Radio.

30 teams of young people aged 14-18 competed for the Rickard shield while teams of Network Scouts aged 18-25 competed for the golden boot.

The competition is a night navigation challenge across hills and valleys and has run annually for the past 12 years and was a fantastic success. It started at 6pm and ran through until the early hours of Sunday morning. By 3am all teams had reached the finish and for the first time ever, every team finished – probably helped by the mild weather and the promise of a hot meal at the finish line.

The eventual winners were Spartans Explorers from Banwell and South Wansdyke Network from the BANES Hub.
