Blaze Explorers take part in Rickard Shield

14 April 2016

994742_960971293994340_6478899605251968365_n Explorer Scouts from the Blaze Unit took part in the Rickard Shield, a County Explorer challenge event, on 19th March.  The team of four Blaze Explorers, aged 14-18, were tasked with following detailed instructions to navigate around a 12 mile course near Chelwood, in the dark. In addition to the navigation and walking skills required, the team also undertook several other physical and intellectual challenges along the way and had to answer a number of detailed questions.

The team of Rory, George, Sam and Lucy completed the course in good time and were placed 5th overall, out of 17 teams. An overnight camp was followed by breakfast and a final get-together of all the teams.

Blaze Leaders, along with other leaders from groups around Bath were part of the team running the event and didn’t turn in until 4.30am when the last teams returned. Despite the late finish everyone who went had a rewarding and enjoyable time.

The Rickard Shield is just one of any activities Explorers take part in. This year other highlight will include the Avon Scout Jamboree in May, and a trip to France over the summer holidays.
