Bath Beavers celebrate 30th birthday

9 May 2016

Young People from across Bath have been joining in the national celebrations marking 30 years of Beaver Scouts.

The Beavers, aged between 6 and 8 years old, have been immersing themselves in a programme of special activities to celebrate, including a
blind assault course, a domino rally, tent pitching, clay sculpture craft and building catapults and bridges.

As part of the festivities, the Beavers also took part in a birthday cake competition.  The large number of entries were judge by Tracey Stevenson, District Scout Network Commissioner, who said “all of the designs were very colourful and sweet, but 10th Combe Down won because of the clear amount of thinking behind their cake.”

Ali Fishlock, their Leader explained, “The cake depicts some of the best bits of the Beavers’ weekly meetings.  The icing is the distinctive Beaver turquoise colour, like our uniforms, there’s toasted marshmallows, baked bananas and a chocolate fire as Beavers love lighting fires and cooking.”

Combe Down Beavers were presented with a £25 gift voucher for winning and all the Beavers from Bath were given a camp blanket badge designed by a local Beaver to mark the special occasion.

Beaver Scouts, who are the youngest section of the Scouting movement, have the opportunity to take part in outdoor activities, to be creative, explore the local community and to experience the excitement of a night away from home.

The number of Beavers in Bath has grown dramatically since launching in 1986 and Bath Scouts are currently looking for additional adult helpers.  Tracey, who has been a volunteer for 8 years said, “Volunteering is easy, fun and flexible. Whatever your skills and availability there will always be some way you can contribute and help more young people to be able to experience the adventure.”
