Southdown Scouts visit Essex International Jamboree

12 August 2016

Look1From the 30th July to the 6th August, 16 young people and 7 Leaders from the 31st Bath (St Barnabas) Scout group in Southdown, joined 10,000 Scouts from around the world at UKs largest international Scout and Guide Jamboree in Essex.

The Scouts, all aged between 10 and 17 years old, enjoyed numerous activities over the week, including a ‘Wet and Wild Zone’, making sweets, abseiling, a zip wire, crate stacking, caving, climbing and a Viennese masked Ball on their sub camp. The Scouts also had the opportunity to meet fellow Scouts from other countries including France and Nigeria, with whom they were able to see how their experience of Scouting differs from that in the UK.

Alfie, one of the Scouts who attended the Jamboree, summed up their adventure; “The campsite was absolutely massive and no matter where you looked the spaces were filled with tents and lots of people. I loved all of the activities, especially the water ones. When it came to the end of the week, the leaders tell me I started to cry as I realised how much fun I had had!”

Look2For many this was the biggest camp they had ever attended and Thomas, another participant from the Troop added “I have
been on a lot of camps before but nothing has prepared me for this one! I was looking forward to all of the activities on offer, but most of all being given the chance to meet scouts from different countries, one night an American Scout just ran up to me and gave me his hat! This is an event that makes me want to stay in Scouts and try and experience even bigger trips away!”

Mark Alderwick, Group Scout Leader explains “An event on this scale gives you a small screen shot of how far Baden-Powell’s idea of Scouting has spread. Giving young people the chance to meet other scouts from different countries and help them develop as individuals.”

Essex International Jamboree is one of many activities that Scouts in Southdown take part in. To find out more, or to join in with future adventures on offer with Scouts as either an adult volunteer or a young person get in touch here.
