Bathampton Scouts go on Narrowboating adventure

20 April 2017

Scouts from Bathampton have just returned from an exciting voyage along the Kennet and Avon Canal in half term. Their first evening was spent at Bathampton Scout HQ practicing their team work, cooking on wood fires and rope skills. The evening finished with hot chocolate around a campfire.

One the first day of the trip the Scouts motored from Bathampton to Bradford on Avon on their boat Dottie B. Mooring on the edge of Bradford the Scouts cooked an evening meal in the cramped confines of the galley.

In the morning the Scouts descended on Timbrells Yard for a hearty breakfast before embarking on the next leg of their trip to Seend in Wiltshire. This entailed operating through various locks and swing bridges with the Scouts in Patrols under the Leadership of their Patrol Leaders before turning around in one of the turning areas on the canal.

The busiest lock was at Bradford on Avon with several boats wanting to go through and a large public audience watching the Scouts operate the locks.

Mooring on the edge of Bowerhill, at an isolated mooring, the return trip from Wiltshire to Bathampton was quicker and easier as the Scouts had become much more skilled and the helmsmen became better at navigating the various obstacles the canal presented them with.

The Scouts returned to Bathampton, tanned after the 3 days of brilliant sunshine, tired but with more confidence after having a go at steering, rope work and cooking on a boat. This was another adventure brought to them by Bath Scouts and their Leaders.

Will Act-Patrol Leader of the Eagles said of the camp ‘Going on a canal boat camp with scouts was a great opportunity, I learnt a lot and had a great time.’

Bathampton Scouts have several more camps coming up with a 4 day camp in Dorset to practice their campcraft, a 24 hour bushcraft camp and a 7 day camp on Guernsey coming up. All planned by the Scouts as part of their ‘Youth Shaped’ pledge to their own programme.
