Congratulations Ashley!

7 March 2019

Congratulations to 51st Bath Scouts’ Group Scout Leader Ashley Russell who was honoured as the ‘Young Volunteer Leader of the Year’ at the recent BathNES Community Awards 2018/19. The awards are selected by the chair of Bath and North East Somerset council in recognition of service to the community.

Ashley is a deserving winner. Since becoming Group Scout Leader in 2014, he has helped revive 51st Bath Scouts from a small Scouts-only section to include full Beaver and Cub sections too. Now, more than 50 young people take part each week.

Behind-the-scenes he leads the Committee of six trustees, steers meetings of Section leaders and galvanises a whole team of adult volunteers on a regular basis.

And beyond the Group his commitment to Scouting has seen him plan and run numerous weekend camps for the young people of Bath Scouts. In 2018, he was instrumental in getting the ambitious and large-scale Bath District Beaver and Cub Camp off the ground – a hugely successful event.

In fact, Ashley says one of his best moments as a volunteer came during the event. “I got a fleeting opportunity to sit back and hear our Beavers and Cubs discuss all the awesome activities they’d tried that day with Beavers and Cubs they’d met from other groups.”

The recognition at the recent BathNES Community Awards 2018/19 comes after almost a decade of volunteering in the Scouting movement. Ashley joined the scouts as a 10-year-old on the Isle of Wight, taking on his first volunteer position as a Young Leader when 14.

Now aged 23, Ashley has not stopped working directly with young people in Scouting since. We’re grateful for his leadership, enthusiasm and time commitment.
