First Response training: what volunteers need to know

Everything you need to check, book, or renew your first aid qualification for your Scouting role.

Already completed a course recently? If it isn’t showing on My Learning yet, you can upload it yourself — see how to upload your certificate below.

What is First Response?

First Response is the minimum first aid qualification required for most volunteers in a leader, manager or supporter role, and is one of the requirements for the Wood Badge. It’s made up of two modules:

6 hours
Total minimum training time
3 years
Valid before renewal is due

Some roles need a higher qualification – for example remote or adventurous activities, or if you’re delivering first aid training yourself. See the Scouts’ First Aid requirements for Scout activities page for details.

Ways to complete or renew it

  • 1. Full-day course Most common

Attend a single 6-hour face-to-face session covering both modules 10a and 10b. Book onto the next Bath District date below, or a course run by another County/District if that suits you better.

  • 2. Blended: e-learning + practical Flexible

Complete the 2.5-hour Module 10a e-learning yourself on My Learning (search “First Response e-learning”), then join a Hampshire Scouts trainer-led Zoom session to finish 10a, followed by attending a short face-to-face Module 10b practical on one of the Bath District dates.

  • 3. External first aid certificate If already qualified

Qualifications from British Red Cross, Girlguiding UK, St John Ambulance, or an Ofqual/Qualsafe-registered provider can count towards First Response. Some courses may need a small top-up to cover Scouts-specific content.

Holding Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)? EFAW does not meet the First Response syllabus, regardless of who delivered it or which awarding body issued it. It does not cover the Scouts Safe Approach protocol, Meningitis/Sepsis, Head Injuries, or Seizures. If you hold EFAW, you need to complete the First Response e-learning on My Learning before it can be credited towards First Response.

Holding First Aid at Work (3-day), 12-hour Child First Aid, or Outdoor First Aid? These need a top-up too, but a different one to EFAW. Complete the First Response conversion course on My Learning before it can be credited.

  • 4. Employment-based qualification Nurses, paramedics, police, forces

If regular first aid or medical duty is part of your job, send evidence of an up-to-date qualification that meets or exceeds First Response. A First Response trainer will confirm it covers everything, or arrange to fill any gaps.

How to upload your certificate

  1. Sign in at scouts.org.uk (or go straight to learn.scouts.org.uk).
  2. On your welcome page, click My Learning.
  3. On the “My overview” page – on a phone, use the menu button in the top right first – click Wood Badges and skills.

  5. Find First Response and click Assessment.
  6. On the “Assessment” page, under “Self-assessment,” click the second grey box to select Level: Achieved skill. There’s no visible text on this box – hover over it to check before clicking.

  8. Click Upload, select your certificate file, then click Open.
  9. Click Request confirmation.
  10. A message will appear at the top of the page confirming your assessment has been saved.

Still stuck, or your certificate is from an external provider and needs a trainer to check it first? Email the First Response Training Coordinator instead.

Common questions

Who actually needs First Response?

Most volunteers in a leader, manager or supporter role, plus anyone working towards their Wood Badge. Check POR Chapter 16’s Roles Table if you’re unsure about a specific role.

I don’t think I need to revalidate – what do I do?

Reply to the First Response Training Coordinator with your reason, or send your existing certificate so My Membership can be updated.

What if I hold an external qualification that doesn’t fully match?

You don’t need to start again. A First Response trainer will identify any gaps – commonly child CPR or Scouts-specific scenarios – and arrange short top-up learning to convert your existing award.

Read the Scouts’ guidance on using external qualifications →

I hold Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) – does that count?

No. This applies regardless of who trained you or which awarding body certified it. EFAW does not cover the Scouts Safe Approach protocol, Meningitis/Sepsis, Head Injuries, or Seizures, all of which First Response requires. Complete the First Response e-learning on My Learning before it can be credited.

I hold First Aid at Work (3-day), 12-hour Child First Aid, or Outdoor First Aid – does that count?

Not on its own. These qualifications need a top-up to meet the First Response syllabus. Complete the First Response conversion course on My Learning before it can be credited. This is a different course to the one for EFAW holders above – make sure you pick the right one.

My certificate isn’t showing on My Learning

Follow the steps above to upload it yourself. If it’s an external qualification, a First Response trainer will check it against the syllabus before it’s credited.
