Bath Korean Jamboree Leaders Commended

Date: 26th Apr 2024 Author: Amy Howard

Four Leaders from Bath who attended last summer’s problem-plagued Korean Scout Jamboree, have all received the Commissioner’s Commendation Award – the first Bath Leaders to be so-recognised.

Henry, Ashley, Laura and Simon, who all hold various roles in Scouting across Bath, received their Commendations from Avon County Commissioner Clive Sandry.

Their citations read: “For the cheerfulness, resilience, and enthusiasm you demonstrated whilst a member of the Sub-Camp Teams at the World Scout Jamboree in Korea. For coping with all manner of unexpected challenges, from the weather, your surroundings and the knowledge gap of others around you”.

The World Jamboree made headline news across the world due to flooding, heat waves, a tropical storm and poor sanitation. All UK Scouts were swiftly re-located. But the four hardy Leaders stay behind to help others still camping, until an incoming typhoon necessitated the evacuation of the entire site to Seoul. Back in the city, they worked to ensure that Scouts from all across the world would still have a Jamboree to remember, and not just for its challenges!

Congratulations to them all. We are extremely proud of them!

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
