Guernsey Adventure For Bathampton Scouts!

Date: 29th Aug 2024 Author: Amy Howard

Scouts and Leaders from Bathampton, aged 11 to 14, have recently returned from their annual summer camp to Guernsey in the Channel Islands.

The fun began even before embarking for Guernsey with a bell-ringing experience and overnight stay in St James Church, Poole.

Next day, after a reasonable ferry crossing, the Troop arrived on Guernsey to set up their site. Using pallets, they built their own benches, tables and dressers to add to their basic facilities of Trangias (outdoor cooking stoves) and hike tents, making camping life a little more comfortable all-round!

The Scouts made the most of their island location. Every day included time spenton the beach, they went crabbing, built sandcastles and enjoyed a coastal boat trip as well as a trip in a rib to see Seals.

With Guernsey rich in history, the Scouts took time to visit the Occupation Museum (displaying the island’s story in the Second World War), the Shipwreck Museum, Castle Cornet Museum and the Signals Museum.

Other highlights included an island-wide quiz and an all-day hike and following a ‘Castles and Towers’ trail.

The older Scouts they had their own adventure with a trip to Herm Island, with an overnight stay. Most impressively, they took up the challenge of ‘coasteering’ at Petit Pois Bay; this involved making their way along the coast, climbing cliffs or jumping into the sea as necessary – all under the supervision of specialist instructors!

Meanwhile the rest of the Troop enjoyed ‘breakfast on the beach’ and a trip to the Valette Military Museum and the ‘Little Chapel’.

Working for most of the camp in their Patrols, it was a wonderful opportunity for the young people to develop skills and increase their levels of independence as well as trying a range of new activities simply not available to them at home. Above all they enjoyed their time spent with their friends in the outdoors.
